Hardware Broken? How to Choose Replacement Parts for Cabinets

News
Comparing old and new cabinet hinge for replacement After years of frequent use, cabinet hardware such as hinges, drawer slides and soft-close dampers will eventually wear out. Many homeowners run into trouble buying replacements. They pick parts that look similar at first glance, only to find they cannot fit, cannot install properly or lose the soft-close function. Knowing how to match specifications is the key to choosing correct replacement hardware.

Step 1: Identify the hardware type first

Confirm which part is faulty before shopping:
  • Concealed hinges: Mainly for cabinet doors. Check if it is full overlay, half overlay or inset hinge. Also confirm whether it has soft-close damping.
  • Drawer slides: Classified by mounting way: side mount, under-mount or bottom mount. Also check full extension, partial extension or over-travel type.
  • Dampers & catches: Small buffer parts for door closing, or magnetic catches to hold doors shut.
Best practice: Take the old broken hardware with you, or take clear photos from multiple angles for reference when purchasing.

Step 2: Measure key dimensions carefully

For cabinet hinges:
  • Measure cup diameter: Common sizes are 35mm (standard) and 26mm (small).
  • Measure cup depth, overlay size, and the distance from the edge of door to the hinge cup.
  • Check opening angle: 90°, 110°, 135° or 165° for corner cabinet doors.
For drawer slides:
  • Measure the fully closed length of the old slide (in inches or millimeters).
  • Measure drawer box width and the gap reserved for slides.
  • Confirm load capacity, especially for heavy drawers storing pots and tableware.

Step 3: Match core functions

Do not ignore functional matching. If your original hinge has built-in soft close, replacing it with a normal non-damped hinge will lead to slamming doors. For drawer slides, if the original design supports full extension, a partial-extension slide will prevent the drawer from fully pulling out and accessing items at the back. If you upgrade hardware, make sure the cabinet panel, hole positions and mounting space can fit the new structure.

Step 4: Material & quality selection tips

  • Zinc alloy hinge body with stainless steel screws is preferred for humid areas such as balconies and kitchens to resist rust.
  • Thicker steel slides bear heavier weight and have smoother movement with less long-term sagging.
  • Check the advertised open-close cycle rating. High-quality hardware can endure tens of thousands of opening cycles.
Avoid ultra-cheap thin metal hardware. They will wear out quickly and require replacement again within a short time.

Step 5: Check hole alignment

This is the most easily overlooked point. New hardware must align with existing pre-drilled holes on the cabinet and door. If the mounting hole positions of the new hinge or slide differ, you will need to drill new holes on the cabinet panel, which may damage the board and reduce structural strength. When hole positions do not match, you can either choose hardware with adjustable mounting plates or ask a professional installer to modify it carefully.

Common Mistakes When Buying Replacement Hardware

  • ❌ Only judge by appearance. Parts may look identical but have different overlay or opening angles.
  • ❌ Ignore load capacity. Heavy drawers fitted with light-duty slides will sag quickly.
  • ❌ Buy non-damped replacements for original soft-close hardware.
  • ❌ Skip measuring and guess the size, leading to wrong dimensions.

When to ask professionals for help

You can replace simple hinges and standard slides yourself if you have matching parts and basic tools. Call a professional installer in these cases: - The cabinet board is already loose or stripped around mounting holes - Corner cabinet special hinges or heavy under-mount slides need installation - Multiple pieces of hardware need to be replaced and doors need overall gap adjustment
