Thicker Boards Don’t Equal Better Quality! These 3 Parameters Matter Most
After years of inspecting materials at construction sites, I find over 90% homeowners fall into the same misunderstanding: they judge cabinet boards only by thickness, believing thicker panels guarantee better quality.
Many merchants take advantage of this misconception, promoting thick off-brand boards with “25mm ultra-thick cabinet” marketing. However, these panels have loose core materials, substandard formaldehyde emission and rough edge sealing. No matter how thick they are, they easily deform and release harmful gas, bringing hidden troubles after move-in.
Thickness is only a basic reference. The three core rigid parameters below determine whether your cabinets are healthy, durable and trouble-free, and you must check them before placing orders.
1. Formaldehyde Emission Grade (Top Priority For Family Health)
Per national standard GB/T 39600-2021, wood panels are graded by formaldehyde release: ENF grade ≤0.025mg/m³, E0 grade ≤0.050mg/m³, E1 grade ≤0.124mg/m³.
Many stores claim “E0 eco boards” verbally, but their products only reach the minimum passing standard E1. Some cheap thick boards use poor adhesive, leaving strong odors inside closed wardrobes, which pose high risks for families with elders, kids or pregnant women.
✅ Purchase rule: Mark ENF/E0 national standard clearly in the contract, and ask for official test reports, reject vague verbal promises of “eco-friendly boards”.
2. Substrate Density & Internal Structure (Load-Bearing & Anti-Deformation Core)
A board’s bending resistance, screw holding power and moisture resistance rely on fiber density, not thickness.
For panels of the same 18mm thickness: high-density OSB or premium particle board maintains stable load capacity without sagging over years; low-density thick panels filled with wood scraps, even at 25mm, will bend, crumble and loosen screws under long-term heavy weight.
Some thick panels on the market gain weight with foamed waste materials, hard on the surface but hollow inside. They are heavy yet fragile, and add extra burden to door hardware, shortening hinge service life.
✅ Purchase rule: Particle board density ≥680kg/m³, OSB ≥720kg/m³. Clean cut cross-section with regular wood chips, no fine powder or hollow delamination.
3. Edge Sealing Craft (Barrier For Formaldehyde & Moisture)
No matter how good the substrate is, low-quality edge sealing ruins everything. Ordinary EVA hot melt glue peels off and absorbs moisture under high temperature or humid weather, letting formaldehyde leak out continuously. PUR hot melt sealing and laser sealing form tight barriers, locking internal adhesive and blocking water vapor invasion.
A standard 18mm high-quality board with complete PUR sealing performs far better than a 25mm thick panel with cheap EVA edge banding. For humid zones, kitchen and balcony cabinets, sealing technology is ten times more important than thickness.
✅ Purchase rule: Prioritize PUR or laser edge sealing. Smooth, gap-free edges without glue overflow, no peeling or cracking risks.
How To Choose Rational Board Thickness?
No need to blindly chase ultra-thick panels, standard thickness fits different scenes perfectly:
1. Regular cabinet side panels & shelves: 18mm, stable load with best cost performance;
2. Floor-to-ceiling doors over 2.4m height: 22mm, effectively prevent sagging deformation;
3. Back panels: minimum 9mm, reject thin 5mm backboards prone to damp bending;
4. 25mm thick cabinet panels are unnecessary: they raise costs and occupy indoor space, making small apartments cramped.
Many merchants create extra markup with “thick board” marketing, hiding three core parameters: eco grade, density and sealing. Homeowners pay more but get problematic cabinets.
